Early Voting Passes House Elections Committee

Next stop State Government Finance and Veterans Affairs committee.

Rep. Bernardy’s (DFL-Fridley) bill to establish early voting passed out of the House Elections committee and will now be heard in State Government Finance and Veterans Affairs.

Testifiers stressed how many Minnesotans use the current in-person absentee voting system as early voting. HF 334 would not replace absentee voting but instead, 15 days prior to the election, voters wishing to vote absentee would be able to vote early at their county auditor or municipal clerk’s offices. This would reduce the cost and administrative burden of processing absentee ballots as voters would be able to insert their ballot directly into the tabulator. The ballot would be processed immediately allowing voters to correct any errors. The actual election results would not be available until the polls closed on Election Day.

The League of Minnesota Cities supports early voting and testified in committee in support of the bill.

Members remain encouraged to contact their legislators about this legislation and ask them for their support.
