The League of Minnesota Cities has developed guidance on employee benefit issues that are impacted by the same-sex marriage law.

Minnesota joins 11 other states and Washington, D.C., in recognizing same-sex marriage. Cities will want to consider how this new same-sex marriage law (Chapter 74, effective Aug. 1) may impact city employee benefits. The interplay between the new state law and the federal Defense of Marriage Act is complicated.
The League of Minnesota Cities has developed guidance on employee benefit issues that are impacted by the same-sex marriage law, including spousal benefits, Public Employees Retirement Association of Minnesota, Family Medical Leave Act, Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), and sick leave.
