For the past 40 years, state government in Minnesota has partnered with Minnesota cities in a revenue-sharing program called local government aid (LGA). The goal of the LGA program is to ease the financial burden on local property tax payers while ensuring uniform and seamless provision of quality public services like police, fire, and roads across our state.
Because cities vary widely in their ability to pay for these services, LGA helps make it possible for Minnesotans to enjoy a consistency of service wherever they go.
However, the LGA program has reached a critical point and is now in need of revision. Executive Director Jim Miller and Policy Analysis Manager Rachel Walker explain why in this video.
